SCRIPTURE FOR THE YEAR: Matthew 28:19, 20
Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
Boyd Chapel Church
(Past and Present)
The history of Boyd Chapel emerged out of a vision placed before the late Rev. Cleophas S. Marshall. As a visionary in the spiritual community of the city of San Antonio, he saw there was a need to reach into the hearts of the people. He prayed and talked with the Presiding Elder about planting a church. In 1955 his request was taken to the Presiding Elder’s District and Annual Conference for an African Methodist Episcopal Church to be planted on the far east side.
At the time Bishop Joseph Gomez was the Presiding Bishop who heard the request and vision. Deep consideration was given to who would be given such a charge to bring forth the name, organization, and planting of this new church. The charge was given to Rev. James Emmanuel Lamkin.
Without a physical location much prayer was before God. Seeking a name, searching for a building, bringing forth the vision, Boyd Chapel became the new church on the far east side. Rev. Lamkin and his family began the process of coming together in his home. Later he found a house on Morningview, as time went on others heard about Sunday School and begin to come.
Special note has to be given to the connecting members from Bethel A.M.E. who came to the aid of ministry and joined forces to ensure the newly organized church was coming together as envisioned. As a community and connected church, others begin to come to support.
Today, there is a remnant whose journey of faith is holding the banner and vision together.
The “vision” has taken on a new life and light. The call to ministry goes beyond the doors of the norm for congregations that are few in numbers but powerful in ministry. The vision has not left the far east side, rather it has taken on new dimensions, new directions, and is redirected for ministry that the people may grow strong to return back to the promised land to strengthen our community and people.
There is a shift in the paradigm of ministry among the people ~ the life of the church has been expanded through our Outreach known as Boyd Chapel Resource and Outreach Center (BC~ROC) now on the Northeast side of San Antonio.
BC~ROC is our developmental and teaching ministry for school age children. Within the ROC they are given an opportunity to chart and develop in areas of academics, computers, and music. This ministry brings newness of life to the church and members. The “source” of expansion is to the “10th Power…” We are just getting started… can you imagine… with right living and working together will do for the church and community…
GOD IS IN THE HOUSE…
WE ARE EXPECTING HIM TO JUST SHOW OUT!!!!
